EPT Deauville: Jake Cody Wins!
In a final jam-packed full of “action” hands, the EPT Deauville concluded last night with Britain’s Jake Cody taking the first tour crown of 2010. Cody had a very solid main event but during the final table he simply could not miss the big hands and he must have been in dreamland when each big hand was paid off.
That’s not to say Cody didn’t play well, of course he did. You need a lot of talent to win an EPT event and Cody clearly has that in abundance. When faced with a former WSOP champion you need a lot of courage as well. Even if Peter Eastgate was short stacked and was the first to be eliminated.
Cody took charge of the final at an early stage. Following Eastgate’s exit in 8th, Michael Fratty picked up an exciting looking
and managed to get all his chips into the middle only to find Cody holding
. No ace and no help from the board sent Fratty to the rail with €92,000 burning a hole in his pocket.
It wasn’t long before Cody struck again. This time Stephane Albertini got excited by
in the big-blind. Cody’s pocket rockets
were going nowhere and Albertini was despatched in 6th place for €129,000.
Claudius Secara was the next to head for the exits when his
unluckily found the
of Mike “Timex” McDonald. No bad beat’s arrived for McDonald and Secara took 5th spot for €165,000.
Cody, after a brief rest, then got stuck into American Craig Bergeron. Bergeron commited most of his stack to a pre-flop raise while holding
. Cody flexed his muscles and set Bergeron all-in with
. An Ace on the flop and another one on the turn left Cody with a large chip lead and Bergeron with €221,000 and 4th place to his name.
Mike McDonald was the next to bid ‘au revoir’ to Deauville as his Jacks got unlucky against the
of Romanian Caraba. That elimination set up the heads-up match with Cody. Caraba, holding an almost 2:1 chip advantage looked the short odds favourite at that stage. It wasn’t to be for the Romanian player, though, as Cody turning the chip deficit around before his final hand (Kings again!) left Caraba hunting for an unlikely Ace. It never came and the 21 year old British player erupted along with the watching fans.
Jake Cody, one of the youngest winners of an EPT, took €847,000 for the victory and must now be one of the most famous poker players from the small town of Rochdale in England. Congratulations Jake! from all at Poker News Headlines.
