Appeal Court: “Poker is a Game of Chance”
Pennsylvania residents, Diane Dent and Walter Watkins who were acquitted of running poker games in their garage, are back to square one today after a court ruled that poker is a game of chance after an appeal by the authorities to the state court of appeals was successful.
The decision by President Judge Kate Ford Elliott and Senior Judge Robert Freedberg is a set back for the argument that poker is a game of skill. The ruling means the game now falls under the anti-gambling laws in the state. In 2008 a ruling was made in favour of Dent and Watkins.

Armed Robbers Raid Swiss Casino
Armed robberies of poker venues and casinos appear to be the flavour of the day from criminals right now. Earlier this month we saw the brazen heist of the EPT in Berlin, yesterday we reported on a shocking raid on a poker game in Austin, Texas and now news has hit the wires of another daring robbery taking place at a casino in Switzerland.
Reports suggest a ten man gang burst into the casino in Basle in the early hours of Sunday morning. The men, brandishing machine guns, took a substantial amount of money and fled the scene leaving staff and players in shock.
GUKPT London won by Cuong Tran
Neil Channing, Victoria Coren, Mick McCool and Lawrence Houghton were just four of the big names that made the final of the GUKPT in London yesterday. None of those could claim the £127,000 first place prize and GUKPT trophy, though. Instead it was the relatively unknown Cuong Tran that took the honours.
Houghton and Coren were the first two players to head to the rail. Coren noting on her twitter that; “Great. I waited 50 minutes before making a move; the big blind woke up with aces. Out in 9th: clearly not meant to be. Ah well. Nice to make a final and I get £9100. Very good week’s work. If 1st place isn’t meant to be, then it isn’t. Another time.”
